OTHERW.R. Murdoch Classic Sloop 55 'Wyvern II' is a famous classic sailing yacht of the S-frame type.
In 1945-1946 the W.R. Murdoch Classic Sloop 'Wyvern II' built in Antwerp as a cruiser/racer, something that was a new concept at the time. The builder and designer, Bob Murdoch, commissioned W.R. Murdoch Classic Sloop 55 'Wyvern II' built for himself, a second copy was intended for sale.
Bob Murdoch had the W.R. Murdoch Classic Sloop 55 'Wyvern II' designed as a handy cruiser, but she soon also proved to be a fast sailor. Because he wanted to compare her performance with other sailing yachts, he registered for a sailing competition, the North Sea Race of 1947. The weather was light and she promptly came first in her class. This was followed by many more competitions in which high rankings were often achieved.
In 1950, Yachting World magazine devoted a large article to this special ship and her designer. In 1991, the Waterkampioen even published two major articles about the ship.
The current owner found the W.R. through an advertisement in 2001. Murdoch Classic Sloop 55 'Wyvern II' in desolate condition on a quay in CuraƧao. The yacht was brought to the Netherlands as a deck load on a container ship, because sailing on its own was impossible as it was leaking from above and below. Between 2002 and 2011 the yacht was completely restored and returned as much as possible to its original state.
Since its launch in 2011, Wyvern II has been sailing around the Netherlands and northern Europe again. The name Wyvern comes from mythology, a wyvern is a flying dragon. During construction it was therefore decided to paint the hull green. Now it is ivory white.
In 2013, the W.R. Murdoch Classic Sloop 55 'Wyvern II' the V.K.S.J. Won a restoration prize. The V.K.S.J. The Association of Classic Sharp Yachts was founded to preserve old and new sailing classics.
